Chilli

What a dull day! Winter is definitely well on the way and to add insult to that injury, the boiler at Auburn Jam packed in yesterday… brrr! Fortunately our amazing plumber-man, Brendon, is all over those pipes like a Scottish musician with a large lung capacity, so we shan’t be cold for long.

On that note of cold weather, Joe’s been mixing tracks for the lovely Emma Laws recently, one of which is entitled ‘Chilli Lights’, and you can listen to it below. Emma’s currently studying to be a vet at Bristol Uni, but over the summer has been recording her songwriting material at Auburn Jam. Joe’s had a lot of fun mixing these really original tracks. Emma’s got a unique vocal sound- very soft and ethereal, but combined with her interesting and fast-moving lyrics, it creates something quite edgy.

If you go to our ‘Listen’ page, you can hear a short excerpt of the first stage of recording for the track, as well as the finished product, so you can get an idea of what Joe does to produce- adding instrumentation, effects, dynamics, panning, textures… the list goes on….

Now I’m going to make myself a mug of hot chocolate to keep warm. Until next time, music lovers.

Busy, Lonely and Bluey

A Weimaraner... not Geof's, but we'll have one of Bluey here soon.

A Weimaraner... not Geof's, but we'll have one of Bluey here soon.

It’s been a bit lonely for me this week at Auburn Jam, as Joe’s had his nose to the grindstone, working through a load of mixing and producing for various clients. He’s had his head buried in the computer, working his magic on many a track, so I’ve had no clients to make tea for! At least Gregory is keeping me company!

Still, I did have a good session last week recording backing vocals for 8 tracks of Geof Pearson’s latest work. I think we’ve recorded somewhere in the region of 50 tracks with Geof so far… his musical inspiration never seems to run out! Geof’s main style is rock but he often ventures outside this and here’s an example of one of his more jazzy tracks, ‘Bluey’ written for his beautiful Weimaraner (awww!). It’s a very simple jazz trio production and a nice example of Joe’s piano skills. He loves a bit of jazz improvisation! I’ve promised Geof we’ll get a photo of him and Bluey up here soon so check back for that.

I’m sitting on the sofa in the studio writing this, listening to Joe create a 5-part brass section for the title track (‘You Are God’) of Segun Ajuwon’s debut album of worship music. It’s a great upbeat gospel/pop sound, with the vocals keeping the feel grounded in his African roots. Keep your eyes on the blog as we’ll be uploading some of his tracks once the album is finished.
