He began working as Studio Manager for Cherry Pie Studios, whilst simultaneously freelancing as an arranger and transcriber, designing and building professional audio systems for churches, schools and studios, and working on various live sound and visual projects. He taught privately and at performing arts schools, and collaborated with educational organisation Cre8.ed by writing magazine articles and running workshops to resource mainstream educators in incorporating music into other subjects. Joe also worked as Musical Director for several professional productions at Theatre Royal Windsor (Bill Kenwright Productions), The Royal Albert Hall and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He also did arranging and transcribing work for Music Sales LTD and Boosey & Hawkes, writing sheet music and vocals selections for various artists including Leona Lewis, Adele, Kylie Minogue, Alphabeat, Oasis and Gnarls Barkley, as well as producing backing tracks for instrumental books. After three years of freelancing in these various musical areas, Joe and Nikki decided to combine their skills and set up Auburn Jam Music in 2009.
